Why September Is Our Favourite Month

Summer is coming to an end.
The days become milder, the light changes, sunsets grow more colourful, and the countryside returns to its quieter rhythm.
For us at Fattoria Bigongiari, September is one of the most beautiful months of the year.
Not only because the weather is perfect for enjoying the Tuscan countryside, but also because Lucca celebrates one of its oldest and most heartfelt traditions: Settembre Lucchese.
A More Authentic Tuscany
In September, life in the countryside slows down.
Temperatures are pleasant, the landscape begins to change colour, and the days are still long enough for a walk through nature, reading beneath a tree, or simply enjoying the silence.
It is the perfect time for those who wish to experience Tuscany without the intense summer heat and without the crowds of the peak tourist season.
Lucca Celebrates Its Traditions
Just a few minutes from our farm, the city of Lucca experiences one of its most fascinating periods of the year.
The highlight is the Luminara di Santa Croce, held on the evening of 13 September, when thousands of candles illuminate the historic centre while the centuries-old Procession of the Holy Face (Volto Santo) makes its way through the city. It is considered one of Tuscany's most moving and atmospheric events.
During the following weeks, Lucca continues the celebrations with the traditional Settembre Lucchese, including:
- Santa Croce Fair (14 September)
- San Matteo Fair (21 September)
- San Michele Fair (29 September)
- the historic Livestock Fair at the Foro Boario
- the traditional Bird Fair
- an amusement park, street markets, cultural events and local celebrations.
These are wonderful opportunities to discover the authentic Lucca that local families have enjoyed for generations.
Then You Return to the Countryside
After spending the day among Lucca's illuminated streets or wandering through the traditional fairs, many of our guests tell us how relaxing it is to return to the farm.
Here, life continues at its natural pace.
The cows return from the pasture.
The sun slowly disappears behind the hills.
The countryside becomes quiet once again.
It is this contrast between the vibrant atmosphere of the city and the peaceful silence of the countryside that makes September so special.
The Countryside Isn't Something to Visit. It's Something to Live.
At Fattoria Bigongiari you won't find staged experiences.
You'll find a genuine organic family farm that simply carries on with its daily life.
The cows are milked.
The animals are cared for.
Fresh milk is transformed every day into the products you'll find in our farm shop.
For us, this is simply everyday life.
For many of our guests, it becomes the most unforgettable memory of their holiday.
We don't invite you to watch country life.
We live it every single day.
If you'd like to spend a few days surrounded by nature, discovering an authentic side of Tuscany while experiencing the unique atmosphere of Settembre Lucchese, we will be delighted to welcome you to Fattoria Bigongiari.
